Sara Arber is Professor of Sociology, and Co-Director, Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender (CRAG) at University of Surrey, UK. She was previously Head of the School of Human Sciences (2001-04) and Head of the Sociology Department (1996-2002) at Surrey. Sara has served as President of the British Sociological Association (1999-2001).
Sara first attended an ISA World Congress in 1994 in Bielefeld and has been an Executive Member of RC 11 since 1998 (Montreal) and Vice President, 2002-06. She was the main organiser of the RC-11 inter-congress meeting on ‘Sociology of Ageing’ at Roehampton University, September 2004.
Sara’s publications focus on gender and ageing, as well as inequalities in health, and latterly multi-disciplinary research on the sociology of sleep. Her books include The Myth of Generational Conflict: Family and State in Ageing Societies (with Claudine Attias-Donfut, Routledge, 2000), Gender and Ageing: Changing Roles and Relationships (with Kate Davidson and Jay Ginn, 2003); and Connecting Gender and Ageing (with Jay Ginn, 1995), which won the Age Concern prize for best book on Ageing in 1996.
